The Secret of Life – Be In Love all the Time!
February is the month of St. Valentine, and our thoughts turn to love. Shops are full of cards, chocolates and gifts, and we think of romantic dinners for two.
So, let us consider today, “what is love?” Well, it is so much more than romantic love, as beautiful and exciting and valid as that is. This kind of love may not last; it changes over time. Sometimes to something more meaningful, sometimes not.
Love can be expressed in many different ways. There is the love between friends and family, the love of a pet, or animals in general. The love of nature, music, art can be inspiring and life-enhancing. We may put our love, our passion, our soul, into a project or career.
One is not “better” than another. Love is. Contemplate for a moment on what love means to you, what you give, what you receive from love. What is lasting, and what is not.
St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians has to be the most beautiful and most quoted treatise on love, and perhaps the popular benchmark. Kahlil Gibran’s piece on love (The Prophet) is the most deeply moving and meaningful, in my opinion.
For me, Love ( with a capital “L”) is the perfect moment where you know, you just know, that there is nothing that could be better than this moment. Where you are is perfection, and if you were somewhere else, that would be perfect too. The person you are with is the person you are meant to be with; but if you are alone, that is just right also. You need nothing because everything is given you. It is finally knowing that true love stems from within; the source of love can be drunk from deeply. And filled with this love, it naturally extends to those around you, into your work, and every aspect of your life -including yourself.
When you know the truth of this love, nothing can harm or hurt you. It even doesn’t matter if you didn’t get a Valentine’s card this year!
